Break Up Your Band

A blog about cataloguing and dissecting the best music of the 1990s (mostly).

John Frusciante is a writer/performer living in NYC. His writing about music and comedy has appeared on AmplifierMagazine.com, The Onion News Network, Cracked.com, etc. He can frequently be seen at the UCB Theatre, where he is the Artistic Associate. He has the same name as--but is not the same person as--the guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Rage Against The Machine - “Take The Power Back”
Rage Against Machine, 1992

BUYB will not be blacked out today as I know how desperately you rely on field trips through the halls of 90s music. Instead let’s have a listen to this relevant song from RATM’s debut album. There’s an argument about whether or not RATM’s mainstream success diluted their political message under every sweaty, turned-backwards Texas A&M ball cap but all I know is listening to this album as a high school kid opened my mind to the possibilities of what else might be out there and fed my desire to find it.

Now quit dicking around and go stop SOPA already.

Also, it’s hilarious to me that the RATM site is not blacked-out today. Nor is there even any mention of SOPA/PIPA. If anything, THAT dilutes their political message.
