Justine Frischmann and her Brit band mates in Elastica had the doors to being briefly played on The Real World and dozens of other MTV shows flung wide open for them with this hit off their s/t first album.

Fun fact: You may think you can steal riffs from Wire and get away but, somehow the vital connection is made.

themusicnextdoor:

Just for the record, I love NIN - The Downward Spiral is close to being my favourite album of the ’90s. I do, however, find Trent’s cover of ‘Metal’ rather dull compared to the original.

I will reblog this in the interest of raising both of our Tumblarity scores (apparently the bar for having a high Tumblarity has been raised to proposing to someone on Tumblr and making everyone throw up all over their goddamned keyboards. Please. Spare me.) and to say your statement has been accepted into the record and we are totally bros now.

themusicnextdoor:

Their second LP gave us this catchy, stream-of-consciousness single with a bass line that you will be humming to yourself all day (you’re welcome). To this day whenever I go to an arena, stadium, or anyplace else that has a mezzanine I need to get to, I think to myself, “You gotta take the elevator to the mezzanine!”

Ian MacKaye makes a very self-referential prank call.

Ian MacKaye makes a very self-referential prank call.

The Ocean Blue - “Ballerina Out of Control”Cerulean,...

The Ocean Blue - “Ballerina Out of Control”
Cerulean, 1991

In 1992 Madonna released her “coffee table” book Sex. Stories circulated by my friends regarding the book’s contents grew to mythical proportions and sent fourteen-year-old-with-a-huge-crush-on-Madonna me on a quest to find the book and/or it’s contents at any cost. With no older brothers or similar connections to the seedy underbelly of the adult world, it was a long and difficult road that finally concluded with the advent of the Internet. You can find not only the entire book, but also the rare hour-long, highly-fappable 8mm film that many of the books photos were made from, on the Internet. God bless you, Al Gore.

Anyway, lots of people not as attractive or brave as Madonna got their huge, largely-untouched-by-the-opposite-sex panties in an uproar about Sex, so she made it up to them in 1994 by releasing this slinky, pulsating single addressing the controversy and making a bunch of money.

See the (also pretty fappable) video here.

Look, guys, seriously, please don’t let it get back to the Crimethinc Collective that I’m saying this because they will totally revoke my Anarchist membership card, tear it up and then throw the pieces in a dumpster that I will then have to go diving in, but I still think RATM was a great band. I know the whole “it’s fratboy punk!” argument has a lot of steam but if it wasn’t for getting into them in high school I might not have eventually wound up listening to “legitimate” punk/anarchist bands. Besides, by being really loud and in everyone’s faces for a few years and then totally disappearing RATM’s career pretty much mirrored most of the political groups I joined in college.

Alice In Chains’ final studio album was released 14 years ago this week. Tracks like this one as well as “Grind” and “Over Now” give this album a harder, sludgier, and bleaker sound than previous AIC albums. The death of singer Layne Staley in 2002 marked the end of Alice In Chains forever.

“Hey, what are you talking about? They just put out a new studio album!”
